Our third straight year at FreePlay Toronto. A very cool arcade bar near the downtown core of Toronto!
The SEGA division of the King of ’94 tournament once again delivered one of the premier competitive retro gaming events in North America. Built around the legendary NHL '94, the tournament brought together elite veterans, longtime community members, and emerging competitors for an intense showcase of skill, strategy, and nostalgia.
The SEGA bracket continued the tradition of preserving authentic 16-bit competition using original gameplay mechanics and classic tournament rules. The event has grown steadily over the years into a globally recognized retro esports competition with participants travelling from across Canada and the United States.
The tournament began with round-robin group play before advancing competitors into tiered playoff brackets, including the King, Duke, and Puke divisions. This structure ensured that players of all skill levels remained involved throughout the weekend.
The event atmosphere blended serious competition with retro gaming culture. Original hardware, CRT televisions, wired controllers, and live commentary recreated the authentic feel of 1990s hockey gaming. Spectators surrounded the featured stations throughout the playoffs, reacting loudly to overtime goals, comeback victories, and dramatic upsets.
We noted a significant increase in new competitors (20!) during the latest edition of the event, demonstrating the continued growth of the NHL ’94 community decades after the game’s original release.
The Sega division of King of ’94 delivered another electric weekend of retro hockey competition, but in the end, one player stood above the field.
AngryJay93 stormed through the 19-player double-elimination bracket undefeated, posting a flawless 16-0 record and capturing the Sega King of ’94 championship dominantly.
Against one of the deepest fields the tournament has seen in years, AngryJay93 combined elite defence, fast transition offence, and clutch finishing to complete a perfect run through the bracket.
The tournament opened with no shortage of surprises.
Kaze quickly emerged as a serious contender with strong wins over SOH, Annatar and IcestormNHL94, showing aggressive offensive pressure and sharp control in the neutral zone.
Meanwhile, Annatar rebounded from his loss to Kaze and began carving through the losers' bracket with authority. The veteran, Super Nintendo competitor, making only his second appearance in the Sega Genesis tournament, rattled off wins against JoeMullen07, EA, Len the Lengend, and SOH to stay alive and build momentum.
Elsewhere, SOH delivered one of the strongest runs on the losers' side, stacking victories over scribe99, niuhuskie224, Rigsby and IcestormNHL94 to push deep into the tournament.
While chaos unfolded across the bracket, AngryJay93 remained calm and clinical.
The top seed opened with a clean 2-0 series victory over JoeMullen07 before dispatching Rigsby and Len the Lengend by identical 2-0 series wins.
Opponents struggled to generate offence. Defensive mistakes were punished immediately. Momentum rarely shifted once AngryJay93 gained control.
By the semifinals, the undefeated run had started to feel inevitable.
Kaze put together one of the tournament’s most impressive performances on the winners side.
Victories over Icestorm NHL94, annatar, and SOH secured a spot in the final, for the second straight year, and established Kaze as the only player capable of matching AngryJay93’s pace.
The semifinal showdown between Kaze and Annatar carried major stakes and delivered playoff-level tension. Kaze answered every challenge, earning a 2-1 series win and punching a ticket to the finals.
No story captured the crowd more than Annatar’s relentless recovery after an early defeat.
Facing elimination almost the entire tournament, Annatar produced one clutch performance after another, culminating with a third-place finish.
The run included statement victories over SOH, Len the Lengend, and EA, with Annatar consistently finding ways to control high-pressure moments.
By the final rounds, Annatar had transformed from an earlier-round casualty into one of the tournament’s toughest outs.
The finals featured the tournament’s two hottest players: AngryJay93 and Kaze.
Many expected a close battle.
Instead, AngryJay93 delivered a championship performance worthy of the crown.
Using airtight defence and relentless puck pressure, AngryJay93 shut down Kaze in consecutive games, with tight scores of 2-1 and 3-0, completing the undefeated tournament run and securing the Sega King of ’94 title.
The victory cemented AngryJay93’s place as the tournament’s clear top player and added another memorable chapter to the legacy of competitive NHL ’94. Angryjay93 captured his 5th consecutive world championship.

The SNES division of King of ’94 delivered another classic chapter in the NHL ’94 community, with clutch goals, bracket drama, and a championship performance from AngryJay93 that left little doubt about who owned the crown.
Entering a stacked field filled with veteran talent and dangerous underdogs, AngryJay93 powered through the tournament, defeating TheProfessor in the finals 3 games to 2 to claim the title.
The tournament opened with tight first-round battles across the bracket.
The Professor survived an early scare against Skankhunt42 with a 2-1 series victory, while AngryJay93 blanked Mooney 2-0 in a controlled opening performance.
Meanwhile, niuhuskie224 quickly emerged as a serious contender. After dropping to the lower bracket, the grinder began one of the tournament’s most impressive runs.
Tecmojon also gained momentum early, crushing Halifax 6-2, and edging out wins over Mooney and Bobkudelski26 to finish with his highest placing ever in 4th place.
niuhuskie224 caught fire.
The run through the losers' bracket became the story of the tournament.
niuhuskie224 eliminated SlapSteve, Skankhunt 42, annatar and tecmojon in consecutive rounds, combining relentless offence with timely defence.
By the time the dust settled, niuhuskie224 had fought all the way to third place, earning respect across the bracket for resilience and consistency under pressure.
On the winners' side, The Professor looked sharp throughout the event.
Victories over Skankhunt42, 2022 Champ BobKudelski26, and AngryJay93 helped secure a place in the championship series. The Professor’s defensive structure and patient puck movement created problems for nearly every opponent faced.
However, The Professor looked almost mortal this year, twice needing three games to win a series (whereas he preceded to the final in 2025 undefeated.)
Championship runs often come down to adjustments.
After the earlier loss to TheProfessor, AngryJay93 regrouped and elevated his play when it mattered most. Cleaner breakouts, stronger puck control, and clinical finishing defined the finals rematch.
With the title on the line, AngryJay93 defeated TheProfessor to secure the SNES King of ’94 championship.
He is the first person ever to claim both the Sega Genesis and SNES World title, and he accomplished this in the same year! He's the undisputed best NHL'94 player in the world!
